Official Catalogue Course Description

This course considers pedagogical, planning, and assessment choices in relation to place and Indigenous contexts, the specific knowledges and situations of learners, subject learning and relational curriculum-making, social and ecological justice, and Indigenous education priorities. Holistic, experiential, and Indigenous inquiry-based pedagogical methodologies will be examined and experienced. This course addresses integrated methods content in language arts, science, social sciences, and mathematics, and appropriate adaptation, assessment, and evaluation.

Meeting Location: College of Education room 2005.  Be aware that this class is about place based pedagogy so while we are assigned a room in the Education Building, we will be meeting at different locations so as to experience place based learning in practice.

My name is Juliane Bell and I am thrilled to be your instructor this semester. I have taught with Saskatoon Public Schools for 5 years, and taught in Calgary before that. I love spending time outdoors with my two small rescue dogs, trying new things, and sharing my many interests with my students. I enjoy comedy and try not to let it get to my head when my students say I'm funny.

I believe that success in teaching boils down to building strong relationships with students, supporting student learning through engaging and meaningful learning activities, and tackling inequity/addressing social injustice. My goal is to teach this class in an authentic way. This means I will be modeling strategies I use with my students, and helping you practice the skills you will use in the classroom. All of the assignments are based on real activities I have done with my students.

Be prepared to be active, engaged, and spend time outdoors every week.  There is a lot of coursework in the class, but I will give you lots of time to work on assignments in class. I am available any time if you have questions or need support. My job is to help you be successful.

We will be spending a large majority of our time outside in the natural environment.  Please come to each class dressed to be comfortable and safe in the natural outdoors.  This includes footwear, clothing, jacket, hat, etc.

I know it's cliché, but I know I'm going to learn as much from you as you do from me (if not more). I'm not perfect and I will ask for feedback every week. This class is for you! Let's make it amazing.
